TheDowJones Industrial Average(DJIA) lost 0.04%, while theStandard & Poor 500(SPX) fell 0.1%. The Nasdaq Composite(COMP) gained 0.3%.

optionsXpress’s Joe Cusick sums up the day’s trading, what there was of it:

Stock market averages are mixed without much news to guide investors Monday. With no economic data or earnings of broad market significance released so far this week, some of the early focus was on overseas markets. Japan was weak again after a report on second quarter economic growth fell short of expectations. However, stocks were broadly higher in China and Hong Kong, while trading in mixed fashion across Europe.

Just because the averages weren’t moving, however, didn’t mean there wasn’t action in individual stocks. Miners of all stripes traded higher, biotech stocks got hammered and utilities fell 0.5%, the largest drop among S&P 500 sectors.
