Best Computer Hardware Companies To Own For 2014

When prepaid debit card vendor Green Dot (NYSE: GDOT  ) announced early this year that it was trialing a new concept in banking, my interest was piqued. After all, the company had seen some hard times in 2012, and I wondered if this new offering would help bolster the company's sagging profile.

Now, Green Dot is ready to release its smartphone-based virtual bank to the world, marking July 4as the official launch date. The four-month trial has apparently been a rousing success, and investors have graced the company with a share price boost of nearly 50% so far this year.

Not your ordinary bank
When Green Dot management discussed the GoBank conceptback in January, CEO Steve Streit noted that fees charged for checking accounts at large banks like Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) , Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) , and JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM  ) can become problematic for the young and others with limited resources. Streit particularly noted overdraft fees -- which can be quite steep at the large banks, sometimes costing more than loans from payday lenders.

Advisors' Opinion:

Emulex (ELX) is a provider of a range of network convergence solutions that intelligently connect servers, storage and networks within the data center. This stock closed up 1.6% to $8.14 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $8.05-$8.22

    52-Week Range: $5.72-$8.99

    Thursday's Volume: 727,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 786,981

From a technical perspective, ELX bounced modestly higher here right above some near-term support at $7.95 with decent upside volume. This stock has been trending sideways inside of a consolidation chart pattern over the last month, with shares moving between 7.50 on the downside and $8.46 on the upside. This modest spike is now starting to push shares of ELX within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern. That trade will hit if ELX manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.34 to $8.46 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ELX as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $7.95 or $7.50 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 786,981 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ELX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $8.99. Any high-volume move above $8.99 will then give ELX a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $10 to $11.19.

So, I think of simple industries as food, entertainment, etc. And anything where logistics provide a competitive advantage. I mentioned a company I own shares of George Risk Industries (RSKIA) before. Its advantage is the ability to deliver a cheap product on time. They can't produce the product for less than the competition. If the purchase price was huge relative to what the end customer was purchasing as part of the same activity (the end customer is construction in this case) price competition would be important. Instead, delivery is important.

I could go on like that. But I not sure I understand why knowing anything about the perceptions of others actually helps my own investment decisions. I also not sure the reasons Ie offered for the cheapness of those stocks are actually the reasons anybody else had for selling the stock, not buying it, etc. In fact, I think those are just plausible reasons I made up.

But that not the problem with wanting to know why a stock is cheap. The problem is how that knowledge or the quest for it directs your attention. And attention is the scarcest resource an investor has.

Once you know what somebody else perception is, you try to either prove or disprove that perception. In essence, I see the problem of thinking about market sentiment of worrying about the Keynesian beauty contest as being like one of those optical illusions. Like the duck-rabbit illusion. In fact, this concern of mine is one of the reasons why Ie suggested investors read Kuhn.

They often talk about some past period like the 1920s or 1950s with a total misunderstanding of what people were looking for in a stock back then. Of how they thought about stocks. Of what they thought stocks were. This isn a misanalysis of the facts. It a misclassification.

When Ben Graham started on Wall Street there was none of this tocks for the Long Runstuff. There was no talk of asset classes. There were investments called bonds. And there were speculations called stocks. And it was heresy when Ben Graham basically said a cheap stock is a better investment than an expensive bond.

Top Biotech Stocks To Own For 2014

Amgen Inc. (0.2%) (AMGN - $111.94 - NASDAQ)(AMGN) is one of the largest biotechnology companies in the world, with medicines for cancer, kidney dialysis, osteoporosis, and other conditions. Given its large size and mature product portfolio, revenue growth has slowed, but the company has been able to cut costs and repurchase shares to sustain double digit earnings per share growth. Earlier this year, Amgen offered to acquire Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc. (less than 0.1%) to bolster its oncology portfolio, with Nexavar for liver cancer and Kyprolis for blood cancers. On Aug 25, after a brief auction, Amgen agreed to pay $125 per share, or $10.4 billion, for Onyx. While initially dilutive to earnings, this acquisition provides significant visibility into Amgen's future, with two blockbuster drugs that could eventually generate over $5 billion in annual sales.

  • [By Glenwoods]

Earlier this year the giant food processor, Cargill, partnered with the small Swiss company, Evolva (SIX:EVE), which was developing its own stevia-based fermentation process, also in the pilot stage. As noted earlier in the article, Cargill is in a partnership with Coca-Cola for Truvia, the bestselling stevia product on the market. The success of the Cargill/Evolva partnership could have big implications not just for Cargill and Coca-Cola, but also on the entire stevia and sweetener market. I further believe the success of the partnership could have a major impact on Stevia First. If Cargill fermentation method produces a better tasting stevia product at a lower cost it would give Coca-Cola a considerable advantage over the other beverage bottlers, food manufacturers, and stevia producers. Such an outcome would force these companies to scramble to find a similar method in order to compete. There would be a very good chance that rival companies, in order to stay in the game, would have to turn to the other company developing a fermentation-based stevia product-- Stevia First. If that happens Stevia First value would rise considerably.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By FinanceGuru]

Shares of almost all 3D printing companies have appreciated considerably this year. Even though analysts are expecting 3D printing to be worth more than $5 billion by 2018, I don't think investing in 3D printing companies, mainly 3D Systems (DDD), is a good idea. Investors have bid up 3D Systems in the hope that its technology will revolutionize the industrial manufacturing process and it will also have a massive presence in the consumer segment. However, I don't think that 3D Systems will be able to fulfill these expectations any time soon, and it may take many years to justify its valuation. Therefore, in my view, investors who want to see good returns in the long run should invest their money in Organovo (ONVO) rather than 3D Systems. Let's take a look why.

  • [By Harry Boxer]

HARRY:  It is.  More than 10 years, I visited 3-D systems and saw a demo, and it was like whoa.  They weren’t even public then.  Of late, SSYS (Stratasys), Proto Labs (PRLB), EX1; those are the four big ones in the industry.  There is a little buy-out tech company called Orvganovo (ONVO) that is now bio-printing organs for testing.
